This journal pre-proof discusses the carbon footprint associated with air travel for attendees of four recent global oral health conferences. By analyzing publicly available data on speakers and presenters, the study estimates the metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2e) and distance travelled for these events, revealing a substantial environmental impact. The research highlights the ethical considerations of balancing the benefits of in-person meetings with their environmental costs and suggests strategies like virtual formats and central locations to mitigate these impacts. Ultimately, the paper advocates for more sustainable practices within the oral health profession to reduce its contribution to climate change.
