This journal article investigates methods for improving dental unit waterline (DUWL) water quality to prevent healthcare-associated infections. The authors focused on free residual chlorine concentration (FRCC) and heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs) as key indicators. They found that while flushing helps restore FRCC, it is often insufficient for consistently reducing HPCs to target levels. Chemical disinfection reduced HPCs but did not always fully restore FRCC. Crucially, the study demonstrates that moderate heating of DUWLs to around 65°C, in combination with flushing, effectively enhances both FRCC and HPC levels, providing a non-chemical and practical solution for safer dental water.
